Sugar Gamers CEO, Keisha Howard
Why did you launch Sugar Gamers?
Well, I never thought of myself as the entrepreneur type. I was very 9-to-5, get paid, get benefits, go home and do it again tomorrow mind-set. The idea, however, came across in 2009 after I auditioned for WCG Ultimate Gamer, a competition reality show. The show said I just wasn’t good enough. … The concept of Sugar Gamers had never been done and I put my plan into action. In the beginning there were eight girls, now there are 400!
Who helps you in the business?
I have many people that have contributed their talents to help Sugar Gamers become what it is today. The most notable faces you would see are aspiring comic book writer Rebecca Rothschild, professional makeup/visual artist Kat DeJesus, and recording artist and brand manager Nikki Lynette.
What technological support do you use to promote your business?
The most popular social media; Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and the old-fashioned, non-technical word-of-mouth.
How do men react to your gaming abilities?
Most guys are really surprised! It’s like they have a preconceived notion that geeks aren’t attractive! I guess I don’t look like a typical nerd.
What are the hottest games right now?
I am not very trendy about the “hottest” games. The ladies of Sugar Gamers all have personal tabs and some keep it very classic. Some of us are still major Tetris*, Mass Effect, Unchartered, and the Resident Evil Series.
