Warner Bros’ ‘Magic Mike’ is a gyrating, g-string filled good-time that while shallow, could make for a cackle filled night at the movies between good girlfriends. More than that, it tells the story of Adam (Pettyfer), a teen slacker in Tampa struggling to find his place in the world.
After losing an athletic scholarship, Adam finds himself doing odd jobs before being saved in the pockets and ultimately in life by a man named ‘Mike.’ (Tatum.) He’s later introduced to Dallas McConaughey) the owner of a strip club featuring the ‘C—-rocking kings’ and voila! becomes part of shake dancing royalty. He’s then introduced to the benefits of his new throning; loose women, hard drugs and crumpled wads of cash, all while his protective sister (Horn) watches in horror. It’s not the best we’ve seen from Tatum but his dance moves alone steal the spotlight. The rest of the cast and the storyline however seems to fall flat; several scenes go on far too long and the other actors while oiled to perfection, don’t really deliver. Nonetheless if you’re looking for a ladies night at the movies without the harsh lights and questionable ambiance of a real life all-male review, gather up a gaggle of your girls and your 1s, and see ‘Magic Mike.’-danielle canada
