Chris Rock recently caught flack for a tweet that stated the obvious truth about Independence Day. In his July 4th tweet, Rock wrote “Happy white people’s Independence day. The slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.”
Uncomfortable with his tweet, several white Americans lashed out at Rock and claimed that he was being unpatriotic.
Conservative blogger Jeff Schreiber responded by writing, “Slavery existed 200 yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100 yrs. We now have a black Potus. #GoF–kYourself.
Also, blogger Tom Roberson of American Thinker wrote a disturbing piece aimed at Rock and other prominent blacks called “Get Over It Already!”
Roberson believes that blacks should forget about the years of enduring the abuse of slavery, Jim Crow and ongoing bigotry. He points out, like Schreiber, that America elected a black president. But even with President Obama in the oval office, blacks continue to face inequities in numbers when it comes to unemployment, access to quality health care and education, high incarceration rates and unwarranted police brutality.
Roberson’s blog also reveals how many whites are still oblivious to how racism continues to affect blacks on a day to day basis.
Would Roberson ever think to tell Woody Allen or Jerry Seinfeld that the Jews should forget about the Holocaust and to just “Get Over it.” The reaction to Rock’s joke shows that America will likely never get over its racial strife, even with a black man in the White House.
Actor Don Cheadle defended Rock by tweeting, “Where exactly is the bigotry in that joke? Who is the victim? 18th century whites?”
For those who have followed Rock’s career, it’s not unusual for him to discuss race.
