Lake Lanier Boating Accidents: Is the Lake Too Dangerous?

As Tameka Raymond and her family continue to deal with the tragedy involving her son, Kile Glover, the large body of water where the accident occurred is coming under scrutiny. Lake Lanier is an Atlanta getaway where families often travel in the summer months for sun, fun and relaxation on the 38,000 acre man-made lake. Most recently, however, it’s been highlighted as the place where Tameka Raymond’s son suffered injuries so severe that he’s reportedly been left brain dead.

Just a few weeks before Kile’s accident, another tragedy occurred at the lake involving two Georgia boys who lost their lives in a boating accident. According to multiple reports, the family of 9-year-old Jake Prince and 13-year-old Griffin Prince was boating on the lake when an intoxicated man rammed his boat into their vessel. Several family members reported injuries from the incident and the two young boys perished. It took divers more than a week to find the 13-year-old’s body.

The tragedies of the Prince boys and Raymond’s son are just two examples of several instances when crowding, drinking or just overall carelessness has been blamed for tragedy at the lake. In 2011 alone, there were 28 reported incidents of fatal or near fatal accidents. Check out a brief history of recent tragedies at the lake below. –danielle canada
