Religion in the workplace … the topic is about as tricky as putting together a jigsaw puzzle featuring the cast of “The Andy Griffth Show” (way too may white pieces.) But when you step back and really take a look at the intricacies of discussing spiritual beliefs on the job, what you will find are a series of delicate layers capable of making both Aunt Bea and Opie blush.
As I reflect on my own life, I look in the mirror and see a man who has never had a problem expressing his own personal beliefs, within reason, of course. While I never try to blatantly convert anyone to Christianity, I do, on occasion, express my love for God in an outwardly artistic way. For the most part though, my coworkers don’t appear to be offended by my occasional expressions, but I know that’s not the case for others across the country.
In their lives, the expression of religion doesn’t come without peril — especially for those whose beliefs may be different than what American society views as the norm. In my quest to hear more of these firsthand accounts, I took to social media to hear from those who deal with the complexities of religion in the workplace on a daily basis.
