George Thomas “Mickey” Leland, a TSU graduate, was an anti-poverty activist and later a congressman from Texas’ 18th District.
Leland was a leading advocate on hunger and public health issues, and in 1984 he established the Congressional Select Committee on Hunger. He also developed a number of programs to address the famine crises in Ethiopia and Sudan during the ’80s. In 1989 Leland died in a plane crash on a mission trip to Ethopia.
