Although it can often be controlled with an anti-viral drug, like acyclovir, herpes is incurable. It’s not life-threatening, but it can be very painful during sexual intercourse. The blisters on the genitals, that are very similar to cold sores, can be an entryway for more dangerous pathogens, including HIV and syphilis.
