Hollywood is full of movers and shakers and the top dogs of the industry no doubt have the busiest phones this side of, well, anywhere. But one thing is for sure, when you’re an A-Lister and you repeatedly ignore another A-Lister’s calls; expect to be called a few choice words the next time said A-Lister runs into you. That was apparently the case between Robert De Niro and Jay-Z when De Niro called the hip-hop mogul “rude” at Leonardo DiCaprio’s birthday party.
According to the New York Post, “spies” for the publication say that De Niro chastised Jay-Z in a room full of celebs for not returning any of his numerous phone calls. Sources say Jay tried to joke his way out of the situation and that his wife, Beyoncé, even tried to intervene, but De Niro could not be swayed from speaking his mind about Jay’s disrespect.
“Bob was sitting at a table, and when Jay-Z went over to say hello, De Niro told Jay that he never called him back,” said a source.
The source claims that Jay agreed to record a song for the TriBeca film festival and that De Niro reached out to him to discuss further details, but Jay ignored all of his calls.
“Bob wasn’t in any mood to make polite conversation,” said the spy. “He told Jay that if somebody calls you six times, you call them back. It doesn’t matter who you are, that is just rude.”
Jay reportedly tried to joke that he’s not good with phone conversations, but De Niro continued to complain about the rapper’s negligence.
“De Niro kept telling him that he thinks he’s the man, but that he was disrespectful,” said the source. “He can be quite scary when he’s angry.”
The spy says that the conversation was the talk of the party, but a source close to De Niro insists that “it was a low-key private conversation between two people that was apparently overheard. It was not a heated discussion.”
