Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes, better known as Johnny Otis, 90, was a musician, bandleader, songwriter, impresario, disc jockey and a talent scout who was often called “the godfather of rhythm and blues.” Otis had a lot of soul and wrote “Hound Dog,” made famous by Elvis Presley. He was also responsible for helping to steer the careers of Etta James, Jackie Wilson and Big Mama Thornton.
