#19 “Keep Ya Head Up” – 2Pac
Hardcore hip hop in the 80s/early 90s wasn’t exactly female friendly. LL aside, fans didn’t expect to hear thoughtful odes to womanhood coming from rap acts like Run-DMC or Ice Cube. That all changed in 1993, when 2Pac released this tribute to strong, Black women. With hip hop’s strong female fanbase today, it could be easy to forget just how groundbreaking this track was two decades ago.
