From Killer Mike to Schoolboy Q: the 10 best indie hip-hop albums of 2012

#4

Habits & Contradictions by ScHoolboy Q

The sophomore effort from the West Coast rhymer is a brilliant combo of gangsta-ism and quirk, with it hard to tell if Q is reveling in the genre’s clichés or mocking them. Backed by funky and futuristic production from big names like Lex Lugar and The Alchemist as well as Top Dawg’s own Digi-Phonics, Q shines on bangers like the moody opener “Sacrilegious,” and the stellar “Hands On the Wheel” featuring A$AP Rocky. Another notch in the belt for the Top Dawg crew in a year that saw them re-establish their city at the game’s forefront with inspired, engagingly creative hip hop.
