The Apollo Theater is hosting auditions for its signature program Amateur Night to be held in Atlanta. Following the great success of Atlanta auditions held in 2009 and 2010, Amateur Night producers are returning to tap into the considerable talent in the Peach State to audition contestants to compete in the 2013 Amateur Night season on the legendary Apollo stage. Apollo Amateur Night is Coca-Cola.
The first of two auditions is open to current college students in the Atlanta metro area. This audition will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, February 1 on the campus of Morehouse College in the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center – Emma and Joe Adams Concert Hall. Student singers, dancers, comedians, rappers, spoken word artists and musicians are all welcome to audition.
Auditions open to the general public will take place Saturday, February 2 at the Atlanta Civic Center, beginning at 10 a.m.
Contestants chosen, from both days, will secure a spot in the Amateur Night 2013 season line-up. Adult contestants, 16 and older, will have a chance to compete for a $10,000 grand prize that is awarded at the end of the season, while child contestants, ages 5-15, compete for a $2,000 grand prize. Singers, dancers, musicians, actors, spoken word poets and comedians are all encouraged to try out for an opportunity to take the stage at the Apollo “where stars are born and legends are made.”
“The Apollo is truly the world’s stage and, as such, we always want to make sure we are getting the best possible talent to compete by reaching out to performers beyond our own city. Like New York, Atlanta has a huge talent pool, and we have been graced by fantastic performers from Georgia,” said Amateur Night Producer and audition judge, Marion J. Caffey.
Since its inception in 1934, Amateur Night has been one of New York City’s most popular live entertainment experiences, launching the careers of thousands of performers and attracting audiences from all over the world. Artists have long revered the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night as a transformative experience where up-and-coming talent feels the power of the legendary performers who have come before them, and where audience response can help make or break a career. Through its partnership with the Coca-Cola, Amateur Night was revamped at the beginning of the 2010 season and features several new programmatic elements including theme nights, a DJ driven pre-show party and, of course, the expanded auditions. These specialized auditions are a part of the Theater’s plans to raise the level of talent for the show, which has launched the careers of countless stars from Ella Fitzgerald to James Brown to Stevie Wonder and, most recently Machine Gun Kelly (MGK).
Please note: For both days judges will only see the first 300 acts, so please arrive early.
The Amateur Night at the Apollo weekly live show is in NYC and is independent from the BET “Apollo Live” television program.
