Before this week, Chris Culliver was just another relatively unknown player for the San Francisco 49ers. But after his infamous anti-gay comments earlier this week, Culliver is now at the center of a national debate about homophobia and gay athletes in the NFL. And though Culliver has apologized for claiming that he would never allow a gay player on his team, he and the rest of the 49ers are still swept up in a growing backlash over his stinging words.
As expected, some have sided with Culliver on his original stance on gays in sports. But, miraculously, several pro athletes, of both past and present, have broken away from the NFL’s traditionally homophobic stance and spoken out against Culliver and spoken in favor of both acceptance and change in the NFL.
