Being thirsty is often mistaken for being hungry, causing you to consume more calories when your body simply wants water. Whenever you feel hungry, drink an 8-ounce glass of water and wait 15 minutes. If your hunger goes away, it was thirst. Drinking water prior to eating will also help you consume less calories by making  you feel full faster.
