Both artists were unique and irreplaceable–as are all legends who are taken from us too soon. But there’s an entire generation of hip-hop fans that have found other heroes to embrace, albeit for different reasons, since 2Pac’s passing. Jay-z has become an icon of Generation Y upward mobility, Eminem is the spokesman of suburban angst, Kanye West represents the new millennium hip-hop fan’s eclecticism and emo-tendencies. But rock, alternative or otherwise, has yet to find a singular voice, a singular persona that rallies a generation. Cobain is the last truly iconic rock star.
