In this prequel to The Wizard of Oz we learn more about the journey of the magician (James Franco) who helped Dorthy and Co. return to Kansas. Director Sam Raimi has a reputation for telling edgy stories, and this one certainly fits that mold. The familiar three witches are in place and challenge the newcomer’s claim that he’s the appointed wizard who’s come to save the Land of Oz. The action is stupendous and the cinematography is top-notch. Although the film is rated PG, it might be a bit too dark for the sippy-cup set. But older kids raised on Harry Potter will thoroughly enjoy it. –p.d. lee
