Sri-Lankan-born rapper M.I.A. is in the middle of an ugly custody battle with the father of her young son. The rhymer trashed her baby’s daddy, Benjamin Bronfman, during a rant on Twitter, criticizing his and his family’s attempts to gain full custody of the child.
The star famously appeared at the 2009 Grammys while pregnant with her son.
Bronfman is the son of billionaire Seagram’s heir Edgar Bronfman Jr. The former couple ended their engagement a year ago. He is reportedly fighting to keep M.I.A., born Maya Arulpragasam , from leaving New York City with their son. The New York Post‘s Page Six reported that she’s been attempting to move with 4-year-old Ikyd out of Brooklyn, where the estranged family has lived separately since the split. According to reports, Bronfman obtained a restraining order in Kings County Court after M.I.A allegedly threatened to take their son to her native London.
The former lovers have never been married and the rapper’s angry tirade, which was subsequently deleted, voiced her resentment of his actions against her.
“BEN You can’t take my son away from me ‘The Mother,'” she tweeted angrily. “Just because you have money doesn’t mean you have the right.”
“WOW. THE BRONFMANS WANT TO TAKE MY CHILD AWAY FROM ME. WHAT KIND OF S–T IS THAT? THEY NEVER SEE HIM,” she continued.
“Every child needs the MOTHER,” she added. “I GREW UP WITHOUT A DAD. If [I] grew up without my mother I wouldn’t be here.”
