Daddy Yankee was the talk of the town yesterday as long-held rumors about his sexuality reached a high point when photos of a man resembling Yankee kissing another man hit the Web. Subsequent rumors claimed that Yankee responded to the photos by releasing a candid statement and officially coming out as a gay man.
“I am a human being like any other, with virtues and defects, and I don’t believe that this is a defect,” Yankee was quoted as saying in a “statement” to the press and his followers.
Though fans of the reggaeton star seemed to be supportive of the idea of Yankee being gay, Yankee remained relatively mum on the rumors, at first, tweeting only, “Temo el día en que la tecnología sobrepase nuestra humanidad. El mundo solo tendrá una generación de idiotas. Albert Einstein” which is loosely translated to “I fear the day in which the technology exceeded our humanity. The world will have a generation of idiots.”
However, later in the day, a rep for Yankee released a statement to Billboard, claiming that the rumors of Yankee being gay were “falsely written.”
“Online blogs and social media are once again to blame for the spread of false news reports,” Mayna Nevarez said in the statement. “Which other media outlets have also shared regarding a public figure. The reports circulating regarding Daddy Yankee’s declaration of homosexuality was falsely written by an online outlet known for fabricating false information and spreading it through social media sites.”
Last month, Yankee denied rumors that he was gay, but opened up about his thoughts on gay marriage and explained that he supported it.
“I have people on my team who are gay, and I respect them entirely and give them work. I believe that is a major decision not of Daddy Yankee but that of the government and the church for them to take great measures regarding human rights.” said Yankee at a press conference.
Well, Yankee is certainly handling the rumors with grace and his words of acceptance for the LGBT community are commendable. Check out some other rumored gay celebs below. –nicholas robinson
