Legendary NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall was the cool breeze alongside John Madden’s funnel cloud of energy. While Madden entertained with his down home colloquialisms and uncontainable enthusiasm, Summerall’s unforgettable baritone and even-keeled demeanor was provided the perfect companion and counter that, together, created the soundtrack to NFL games on Sunday afternoons in the 80s and 90s. Together the two created broadcasting magic. Now that unforgettable voice has been laid to rest as Summerall died at age 82.
Celebrities, Summerall fans and NFL devotees alike took to social media to express their condolences over a great loss, but more so to celebrate a man who defined a generation of the NFL as a player and as an announcer.
RIP Pat Summerall, for so long The Voice of the NFL. As humble as was great. Fought through so much. Touched so many. I will miss him.
