Macy’s ‘Fashion Star’ Caprice Willard shares corporate success in fashion industry

Carprice Willard Macys Fashion Star

Caprice Willard is the fashion mind behind one of the biggest retailers in our country, Macy’s Inc. As a young girl, Willard loved fashion, and with her family’s support, she pursued her dreams. After attending UCLA, Willard joined the Macy’s team through their executive development program.

Willard worked her way through Macy‘s buying offices and stores, which prepared her for various positions. She was a buyer for dresses, senior buyer for cosmetics, and divisional merchandise manager of intimate apparel, before she landed her job as vice president and regional project manager for women’s apparel.

Caprice Willard Fashion Star Willard is currently featured on NBC’s “Fashion Star,” where emerging designers compete in hopes to become a household name under the Macy’s brand.

Recently, rolling out had a moment to chat with Caprice Willard about her storied career.

What or who inspired you to make it to this level?

The key inspiration in my life has always been my mother. She has always pushed me and supported me in whatever I wanted to do. There was never anything that was out of reach — even if it was something they didn’t understand. Being a buyer wasn’t even in the realm of a career choice, but once I stated that’s what I wanted to be, she was very supportive.

What about in the fashion realm?

I definitely admire Rachel Roy. Not just her design aesthetic, but her business sense. I think she has such a great total package when it comes to identifying great trends, designing great trends, but also packaging it in a way that everyone can relate to.

I also love Jessica Simpson, and everything that she’s been able to create. She’s created this brand that segues into multiple classifications — shoes, dresses, etc.  She focuses on the everyday woman, which is why she’s such a perfect fit for Macy’s. She’s just very accessible, which translates into her designs, and it’s also why America loves her.

As you moved up the corporate ladder, you’ve had a lot of experience working in team settings. What is the best way to stand out when you’re working as a team?

There are two key ways to stand out when working in a team setting. First is being a really good team member and having an integral role within the team. Nobody likes to work with anyone who is just out for self.

Second, showcase your leadership skills. Even in a team environment, someone has to step up and be the lead. Most people are looking for someone who’s able to be a good part of a team, but also comfortable stepping up into the leadership role.
