Headed into the Rock Hall: Public Enemy’s 20 greatest songs

No. 1 “Fight the Power” (1989)

YouTube video

One of the greatest hip-hop songs ever released, this anthem of resistance was the theme song for Spike Lee’s classic 1989 film Do the Right Thing and remains Public Enemy’s most recognized song. It was later added to P.E.’s third album Fear of A Black Planet and from it’s political rally-themed video, to its opening “1989!” announcement and Elvis Presley diss–the song is beyond classic and required listening for anyone who considers themselves a Public Enemy, hip-hop or music fan. Period.
