As Collins noted, if he’d come out of the closet in, say, 2003, or really any year before now, it’s likely that his decision could have spelled the end of his career. Homophobia, femiphobia and transphobia have had a stranglehold on American culture for centuries and the hyper-masculine world of sports was traditionally a breeding ground for such discriminatory mind-sets. However, as more gay celebrities and their allies have come out in support of the LGBT community, the American mind-set has changed.
