Athletes who have made bold political statements

At the 1968 Olympics, two American runners, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, raised their fist as they stood on the medal platform during the “Star Spangled Banner”.

The raised fist was a symbol of Black Power and in this historic moment they silently protested the treatment of African Americans in the Unites States.
