On Thursday, May 30, a 22 year old Tyler, Texas man Dramon Rashon Green was sentenced after pleading guilty to capital murder in the death of his 2 year old daughter Ayanna Webb. Ayanna was brought to the hospital with suspicious injuries and died from bleeding to the abdomen in 2011 after undergoing emergency surgery that failed to stop the bleeding.
Police officials originally believed that A’yanna Webb and her twin sister were playing in the family’s apartment when apparently they woke their father from a nap. According to authorities, one twin was put in time out, while Dramon “Mon” Green took A’yanna outside and spanked her. Medical personnel soon alerted police that the original story did not match the cause of death. Investigators later determined that Green had kneed the toddler in the abdomen in an outrage after she woke him up from a nap.
The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported that the district court judge sentenced Green to life without the possibility of parole. “I’m really pissed off about it” said A’yanna’s grandfather who was very upset with the outcome. “I hoped they would have given him the death penalty I really did. It just makes me sick.” The Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham summed up the decision by saying “if Green had gone to trial, he could have received the death penalty. He pled guilty and sometimes the justice system has to take what it can get.”
