Were Paula Deen’s comments on talk show in 2012 racist?

Paula Deen appeared on the New York Times‘ talk show “TimesTalks” in 2012 and the topic of race came up. Deen talks about the plantation her father owned and while she never used the term slaves, she refers to them as the ‘help.’ She continued the conversation stating that the slaves were like family.

The icing on the cake?

Paula Deen brings out her “black friend” and as she is looking for him in the audience, she yells out, “Come on out here Hollis, we can’t see you standing next to that darn board [the board is black].” The host uncomfortably laughs it off.
