July 4th is when the United States celebrates it’s independence, and in that spirit, we decided to celebrate a few of the greatest “independent” albums from across the musical spectrum. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when “indie” became a thing, but from the moment the Velvet Underground released their debut album in 1967, a path was blazed for artists who ran counter to popular music. It didn’t birth the notion of the independent artist. but It certainly played a huge role in shaping the way we view such artists today.
So let’s acknowledge the greatest independent albums in rock, hip-hop and R&B. Some of which, actually became huge sellers.
