For the second time in less than six months, Oprah decided to tackle the issue of males being raised without their fathers. On July 7, Oprah’s OWN network aired “Oprah’s Lifeclass: Fatherless Sons, The reaction.”
On the show, Oprah was joined by Iyanla Vanzant, Geoffrey Canada (Harlem Children’s Zone) and Dr. Steve Perry (Capital Prep Magnet School). They each shared personal stories and attempted to give solutions to the ongoing epidemic of young men being raised without fathers.
Canada provided keen advice on how fathers could reconnect with their kids by saying, “1. Pick your son up from school; 2. Cook a meal together; 3. Take a day off of work to go on a school trip; 4. Go to parent/teacher conferences; 5. Show up at school just because; 6. Go to the school play; 7. Show up at graduation; 8. Teach your child about something you love.”
