Are comic book and film fans ready to see a major comic superhero turn gay? Well, according to Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, it’s about time we get an answer to that very interesting question.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Garfield, who plays the role of Peter Parker in the Spider-Man film series reboot, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” pondered why writers and filmmakers never explored the idea of a gay Spider-Man and revealed that he asked his film’s producer, Matt Tolmach, why Parker’s love interest, Mary Jane Watson a.k.a “MJ,” had to be a woman.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Garfield shared. “What if MJ is a dude? Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
Garfield ponderings didn’t stop there. He’s also thought about who would play a male MJ and came up with a surprising pick for his choice of a male love interest.
“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since “The Wire.” He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!” said Garfield.
Despite Garfield’s suggestions, Parker won’t be sharing any onscreen love scenes with a guy anytime soon. Sony previously cast actress Shailene Woodley to appear as MJ in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her performance was recently cut out of the film. That leaves an opening for a possible male love interest, Sony is looking to recast MJ for a debut in the second or third movie in the four-movie series.
Well, interested fans won’t get to see Spidey fall in love with a man in the near future, but we’ve no doubt that fans will one day see a gay or bisexual superhero on the silver screen. For now there are many gay superheroes in the world of comic books. Check out a few of them below. – nicholas robinson
