The blue collar rocker from New Jersey had become a word-of-mouth sensation on the strength of his live performances, but his albums had yet to find their audience. On his fourth project, “The Boss” finally gelled with his E Street Band buddies, and borrowed a few tricks from Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” production style. The result was his first huge-seller and the greatest album of his career.
