The protagonist, Clary Fray (Lily Collins) learns of her elite warrior status after her mother goes missing, which is odd, because you’d think dear old mum would’ve had that chat with her teenage daughter a long time ago. But suspend logic here and you will be rewarded with an entertaining witches’ brew of dark magic, familial secrets and star-crossed lovers. –p.d. lee
