When asked about the motivation behind planning the program, council member Wanda Wallace stated, “About 5 years ago, I battled with a heart condition and I learned I needed to exercise more and eat healthier… As a public figure, I wanted to serve as an example of healthy living and promote health and fitness.”
Wallace says her objectives for the 5K initiative are community involvement, health education, and to increase the dialogue with local and state government to help combat obesity.
The GET FIT! Riverdale – 5K Health and Fitness event is a fundraiser to create a bank of school supplies to support the public schools in Riverdale. Participants are encouraged to donate unused school supplies (pencils, backpacks, paper, crayons, etc.)
