Rapper Ja Rule will co-star in faith-based film, In Love With a Church Girl, along side Latina actress Adrienne Bailon. During a recent visit in Atlanta to promote the film, Ja Rule talked about his movie role.
How did you become a part of this film?
I was approached by Galley [screenwriter] and Steve [director] to do the film. At first I was a little hesitant. I was like this is a faith-based movie I’m a rapper and I don’t know if that would kind of mix and match but I read the script, I really enjoyed it. I thought the character was really compelling. What really attracted me to it were two things, it was a true story which I love true stories, and also the character [Miles] and I had a lot of similarities and parallels between us.
After shooting this movie, you were faced with a prison sentence. Please share how you prepared your family for your absence.
Filming the movie before I had to go to jail was a big burden on my mind, thinking about my case, or am I going to be able to stay at home with my family so it was a lot on my heart and my mind. I think at that time God put me in this position and I know it sounds cliché when people say stuff like that but it’s the only thing I can believe at this point because everything has been going so well for me prior to me coming home. I’m just feeling like this had to be God working on me a little bit and putting me in a position to be around all these great people.
Do you feel like this movie helped you going into your situation with a clear mind?
Yes, because I started thinking more about God and my purpose in life and why I’m here. All of these things I start thinking about more when I got closer to the Bible. While I was in jail, one of the first things I attempted to do was read the whole Bible from front to back. –necorey johnson
