Jay Z is under investigation for giving a pricey gift to New York Yankees infielder Robinson Cano. The gift in question is a $34,000 watch from Jay’s limited edition Shawn Carter Classic Fusion Hublot that was given to Cano last month for his 31st birthday.
In the spring of 2103, Jay Z launched Roc Nation Sports management division, a sub-division of Roc Nation in partnership with CAA Sports, in hopes of helping athletes in the same way Roc Nation has been helping artists in the music industry for years. Cano was one of the first athletes to join the group along with NBA’s Kevin Durant and NFL’s Victor Cruz.
The rule in question that officials claim Jay Z broke states,
“No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person’s or firm’s services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor.”
According to the MLBPA rules, any gift over $500 must be disclosed to the union in writing, and as a result, Jay Z could face hefty fines for his actions if found guilty.
Cano posted photos of the watch on his Instagram page, simply implying that it was a Shawn Carter limited edition timepiece.
