Think back to 1995, when pop icon Michael Jackson was still reeling from the damage the 1993 child molestation charges had done to his image. He’d just inexplicably married Lisa Marie Presley, a union that was met with skepticism and snide commentary–much like Kanye’s relationship with Kardashian. MJ and Elvis‘ daughter were the most talked-about couple in America at that particular moment–and probably the most polarizing.
So what did they do? How did they respond to the scrutiny and the criticism? They went on a series of groan-inducing public displays of affection; including an interview with Oprah Winfrey, that weird kiss at the 1995 VMAs–and of course, that “You Are Not Alone” video.
For those who don’t recall the video, it featured Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie basically nude (or near nude) set against a backdrop of pillars and sculptures. It was a visual testament to their “togetherness,” but instead of coming off sweet and sentimental, it was mostly just creepy and forced.
Kanye and Kim are in a similar place with “Bound 2.” If it’s supposed to be a statement about their relationship–well, what’s the statement? That they have great, kinky sex? That they are isolated in a make-believe world? What do those horses mean? Kanye is at a point in his career where his art is becoming more ridiculous because he’s intent on using it to prove his love for a woman that most of his fans don’t want him to be with. But love doesn’t need to be validated by anyone. So maybe ‘Ye should focus on being a good dad and husband, making strong art, and stop feeling like he has to shove his relationship down everyone’s throats. Because he’s just going to get more gagging from the masses.
