Facebook is a common place where individuals go to speak their minds, share their special moments and sometimes tell a little too much about their personal lives.
One mom, Maria Kang, recently known as the “Fit Mom,” is a user who uses her Facebook page as an outlet to her healthy lifestyle like so may others. However, she has been temporarily banned from Facebook this week after she posted her opinion and complained about all the positive media coverage that an online group which encouraged plus-size women to post pictures of themselves in lingerie and bikinis to show what “real women” look like.
Kang caused some serious controversy earlier this year after she posted a photo of herself with her three young sons with the tag line “What’s Your Excuse?” on her Facebook page. The photo, which she intended to serve as inspiration and motivation for other moms, turned into an online attack on Kang, who is now being labeled a “cyberbully.”
The mother of three is worried that certain groups on Facebook are praising obesity and unhealthy eating habits. She posted her thoughts on Facebook but later deleted it after it was reported as “hate speech”:
“People made me feel bad about posting a picture of me and my children. When you see someone who is healthy it’s almost so shocking. … We’ve gone to a point where we’re normalizing a health crisis. We keep blaming the culprit–school lunches, fast food– when the real change starts at home. We need to change this strange mentality we are breeding in the U.S.”
Kang wrote one final post before the ban took place, saying she didn’t want to shame overweight people but that she believes people are celebrating unhealthy habits.
“I think you should love yourself,” Kang told ABCN reporters. “But there’s a fine line we’re walking between I love myself and accept myself, and I love and accept and want to progress myself.”
