When fans turn to enemies, it can be deadly. An Alabama fan and mother lost her life because she was indifferent when the very team she was cheering for lost to Auburn Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 during the Iron Bowl. Michelle Shepherd was shot by a fellow University of Alabama fan following a game night party. It was a game that will go down in history with Crimson Tide losing to the Tigers 34-28 in a shocking last-second touchdown. Even though Alabama lost its ranking as No. 1, the in-state rivals showed good sportsmanship. However Shepherd wasn’t so fortunate.

The mother of three (two boys and one girl, ages 9, 7 and 4) and social worker attended a party in Hoover, Ala. with her sister Neketa. Shepherd, who’s also a Miami Heat fan, commented this loss wasn’t as bad as game four of the 2011 NBA finals. A drunken female partygoer disagreed, confronted her, and shot her to death with a small caliber pistol.

“My sister took her last breath in my arms,” Neketa Shepherd told the Birmingham News.

“I heard her take her last breath and I knew she was gone.”

The shooter’s name hasn’t been released. The family is searching for ways to break the news to her kids.
