It’s turning out to be the Battle of the Black Brits at 2014 Golden Globe Award nominations.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who got a Golden Globe nod for his awe-inspiring portrayal of free man-turned-slave Solomon Northup in the searing epic 12 Years a Slave, was also nominated for his role in Dancing on the Edge.

Hollywood heartthrob Idris Elba also snagged two individual nominations, one for his portrayal of recently deceased South African icon Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Road to Freedom, the other for his role as a genius murder detective in the drama miniseries “Luther.”

Not to be outdone, black British director Steve McQueen got two nominations as well, one for his outstanding direction on 12 Years a Slave as well as Best Screenplay for the same movie.

Overall, 12 Years a Slave received five nominations. The Butler, which landed three nominations for the  upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards, including Best Movie, Best Actor (Forest Whitaker) and Best Supporting Actress (Oprah Winfrey) received no Golden Globe nominations.

Not surprisingly, Kerry Washington got a nod in the “Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama” category. Don Cheadle, who plays a devious yet brilliant corporate executive on the rise in “House of Cards,” was nominated in the “Best Actor, TV Series Comedy” category.

The chilling and popular “American Horror Story: Coven” starring Angela Bassett and Gabby Sidibe got a nod for “Best TV Miniseries or Movie.” Ejiofor’s “Dancing on the Edge” also got a movie nod.

The 71st Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast on Jan. 21, 2014, on NBC.
