N.W.A. biopic produced by Ice Cube finally locks in a writer

We’re one step closer to a biopic on pioneering west coast hip-hop supergoup N.W.A.

That’s right. Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella (and maybe even brief group member Arabian Prince) are on their way to the big screen.

Ex-group member and superstar rapper/actor/producer Ice Cube is overseeing the project so we can rest easy that justice will be done. According to The Hollywood Reporter, veteran screenwriter, Jonathan Herman, will take on the task of scribing the heavily anticipated movie, and F. Gary Gray is set to direct.

N.W.A. rose to prominence in the late 80’s as one first gangsta rap acts to go mainstream. Their “F**k The Police” record garnered attention from the FBI and helped drive their debut album, (and subsequent title of this movie) Straight Outta Compton, to multi-platinum status with very little radio or video play.

Ice Cube left the group in 1989 amid allegations of financial funny business by manager Jerry Heller. Dr. Dre’s departure in 1992 more or less ended the group. Founding member Eazy-E died of complications related to AIDS in 1995.

No projected release date has been made for the movie as of yet.
