From the pinnacle of mainstream music, working with artists like Aaliyah and Arrested Development, to an altar, Shonlock has painted the world a richer shade of love with his gift of music and faith. After receiving an inspiring call from fellow Grammy-nominated revolutionaries GRITS, Shonlock’s career flourished and also led to an entirely new perspective on life. His new sophomore album, A Night to Remember, is a sonic stroll through the journey that changed his heart and life forever. Check out Shonlock’s Q&A with rolling out here.
What led you to your art form?
I started off as a hip-hop dancer. My mom is a good dancer, so I think I picked it up from her. When I was little, I pretended to be James Brown and people’s reaction to it was interesting. It all started out as playing, but as my family cheered me on, I started to really feel it! I think I was bit by the entertainment bug then.
Do you actively seek inspiration or does it find you? Or, is it a combination of the two?
I seek inspiration, but it finds me most of the time … in mid-conversation or during random things.
Who do you consider to be your peers in your field? Who do you see/use as examples for you to emulate?
Anyone striving for excellence with their gift, and impacting culture for the better is a peer to me.
Do you think that there are any widely held misconceptions about art and/or artists? If so, what are they and how do you work to dispel them?
I believe people think most artists are rich, way before they really are … most lose popularity before they ever see any real money.
