Naya Rivera may be one of the biggest stars on “Glee” but there’s little that is joyful about what’s happened to the actress over the past month. After her longtime boyfriend abruptly called off their engagement last month, rumors began to surface earlier this week that Rivera had been fired from “Glee” over a reported feud with co-star Lea Michele. Although it’s unclear if Rivera’s TV career is in turmoil, it’s recently been confirmed that she’s been dropped from Columbia Records.
According to Billboard, Rivera signed with Columbia back in 2011, becoming one of the first “Glee” stars to land a solo record deal. After two years of relative silence, Rivera finally released her first single, “Sorry,” with her then-boyfriend Big Sean, last September. However, the song failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100 and has only sold 34,000 downloads.
But Rivera isn’t the only “Glee” star who has struggled to launch a successful solo career. Her reported frenemy, Lea Michele, released her own solo album, Louder, in March, but the album has only sold 87,000 units to date. Fellow “Glee” stars Darren Criss and Amber Riley also have record deals but have yet to release albums.
Hopefully, Rivera is keeping her job at “Glee.” Otherwise, she’s about to hit a major slump that could bring her career to a grinding halt. – nicholas robinson
