Nicki Minaj certainly had an eventful time last night at the 2014 BET Awards. Besides performing “Pills N Potions” and winning two awards, the rapper also gave a shocking confession about a near death experience last week. But what also had people talking was a supposed jab that she took at fellow female rapper Iggy Azalea.
During her four minute acceptance speech for her fifth consecutive win for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Minaj made a jaw-dropping declaration about the authenticity of her lyrics and seemed to diss other female rappers in the process.
“What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it,” she said,
The crowd let out a collective gasp before Minaj clarified that she meant no offense to any other rapper … “No, no, no shade, no, no, no shade,” she said, smirking.
However, many people assume that she was speaking of Azalea, who was up for the same award against Minaj. Although Minaj has never directly spoken about Azalea, she did respond to a Forbes article that claimed Azalea was the new queen of hip-hop.
Okay, I’m reloaded,” said Minaj, cackling, while chatting with Power 105’s “The Breakfast Club” back in May. “Listen. All Forbes needs to worry about is my finances and when I’m going to be selling Myx Fusions for $250 million,” Minaj added. “That’s all they need to worry about. We rely on hip-hop connoisseurs and blogs for that kind of information. So we appreciate it, but no thank you.”
It is a bit suspicious that Minaj mentioned authenticity while accepting an award abut female rappers but considering that Minaj, like Azale, has been accused on numerous occasions of having her male mentor, Lil Wayne, write her raps, we can understand why she made such a statement. Perhaps it was also partially inspired by the manufactured rivalry with Azalea but we hope that Minaj sees that there is room for both of them in hip-hop. – nicholas robinson
