As the killing of Mike Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, MO continues to spark outrage and protest, a vigil honoring his memory has been organized and will be taking place in various cities across the country.
The vigil was sparked by social activist @FeministaJones, who created the #NMOS14 hashtag. which calls for national moment of silence, after the killing of Michael Brown. The hashtag and vigil are in remembrance of all who have fallen victim to police brutality. The National Moment of Silence 2014 will take place today at 7 p.m. ET, from Hawaii to New York. Groups across the country are planning to silently protest the use of excessive police force.
“It’s not just Ferguson. Police brutality is pervasive. It’s happening in so many cities,” The New York-based social worker told the USA TODAY Network.
Reportedly more than 75 organizers have already spoken with Jones and held a conference call on Wednesday night to work out the logistics of the nationwide vigil. More than 90 communities have reportedly committed to hosting the silent vigil.
