Ludacris’ mom, Roberta Shields, reveals her parenting secrets

Sisters of Today and Tomorrow celebrated their 6th anniversary and open house with John Eaves, chairman of Georgia’s Fulton County Commission and Roberta Shields, president of the Ludacris Foundation in Atlanta over the weekend.

Chairman Eaves provided the welcome address and Shields was the keynote speaker, discussing the “Three Cs” she used to help her famous son, actor and rapper Chris “Ludacris” Bridges succeed in life and his career: cheering, championing and coaching.

SOT alumna Courtney Britton, a junior at Spelman College majoring in English, and SOT member Armirica Hill, a freshman at Atlanta Area Technical College majoring in Political Science, both shared how SOT has benefited them with life skills development.

“Ms. Carla’s goal was to help me grow, by making me as uncomfortable as possible,” says Britton who admittedly was a shy teenager who was nervous about speaking in public prior to SOT’s executive director, Carla Morrison, providing every opportunity for her and the other girls to network and do presentations. “I now know being a good journalist isn’t just about being a good writer. You have to network and develop resources, which I’ve learned how to do under Ms. Carla.”

Hill discussed how her life changed after coming from south Georgia and getting involved. SOT set up an opportunity for her to intern with one of America’s most beloved members of Congress, Civil Rights leader John Lewis. “And, this all happened by joining Sisters of Today and Tomorrow,” Hill shared.

SOT helps to build confidence, character and leadership in girls ages 9 to 18, and the women in their life, through various workshops and programs that focus on self-esteem, education, health, fitness and careers.

The organization’s next major event will take place during the month of March 2015, for their 10th Annual “Celebrating Women of Color” program.
