A concerned citizen helped put the puzzle together by reporting items she found, including a receipt, an empty Herr’s potato chip bag, a broken key chain, smashed glass, a zip tie, and then called police after hearing news reports of the abduction.
The receipt led investigators to the Acme store Barnes visited after allegedly kidnapping Freeland-Gather where they were able to obtain clearer CCTV images of the suspect. The jerk used her ATM card to purchase a bag of chips and to get cash for himself. Agents moved in once they received a tip from the ATF Office in Richmond, Virginia, which was investigating Barnes.
