A 22-year-old contracted HIV after getting a manicure. According to the Daily Mail, the women tested positive for HIV and had no idea of how she contracted the virus.

The woman had not engaged in unprotected sex and never used shared needles. After thinking about how she could have contracted the virus, she remembered that her cousin had the virus. Years ago, the woman and her cousin shared manicure instruments.

Doctors believe the woman contacted the virus about 10 years ago. Although doctors said it’s rare for a person to contract HIV through manicure instruments, it’s not impossible.

Along with manicure instruments, individuals who get tattoos and acupuncture should make sure that the implements are disinfected before they use them.
