The last words of Eric Garner were “I can’t breathe,” and these three words have been a rallying cry for protesters around the country. But Corporal Jason Barthel of Mishawaka, Indiana, police department takes offense to Garner’s dying words and he is protesting with a new line of clothing. His line of clothing reads “Breathe Easy, Don’t Break the Law” and sales are going well.
Barthel is the owner of South Bend Uniform shop and his clients are police, firemen and EMS workers He stated, “The problem is we have a lot of people who are trying to create problems between the citizens and the people who try to protect them. When you break the law, unfortunately there’s going to be consequences, and some of them aren’t going to be pretty. Unfortunately that’s the reality.”
In addition, Barthel feels that the words “I can’t breathe” aggravate racial tensions and his line of clothing will help bring people together at $7.95 per T-shirt.
