If you lost a fair share of your following this week, you are not alone! Earlier this week, Instagram announced that they were purging their network of any spam accounts. So any Instagram follower you had that was a bot or for some, purchased followers, it would be wiped out by the end of December.
“We’re in the process of fixing an issue that incorrectly includes inactive or fake accounts in follower/following lists,” the company wrote on its help page. “We want to maintain the best possible experience on Instagram, so we do our best to remove spam, fake accounts and other people and posts that don’t follow our community guidelines. As we remove these accounts, some people may notice a decrease in their follower/following counts.”
Instagram itself lost over 18,000,000 followers! While a few celebrities like Mase took a huge hit losing 1.3 million followers [causing him to delete his account altogether], many more A-listers followed in suit, losing hundreds of thousands to millions of “fans.”
