Darrin Henson dishes on strip club drama, 'Chocolate City,' new cast of 'Single Ladies' and more

Darrin Henson

Darrin Henson has been a consistent figure in film and television since his breakout role as Lem on the Showtime series “Soul Food,” and 2015 will be no different for the talented actor, dancer and choreographer. Henson talked to rolling out about his role in the upcoming film, Chocolate City, and other projects.

“I play Magnus. Magnus is one of the dancers in the club. He has actually been in the club for a while and there is new blood, and there is some difficulty with new blood. There’s some tension with the changing of the guard,” he says.

Henson will also star in the film The Choir Director, based on the book of the same title written by Carl Weber; and Sons 2 the Grave, which he explains “is about an inner-city young man who is very, very talented and plays basketball. Some of the life experiences that go along with being a talented young man but not having the financial resources puts him in a compromising position. My character is a detective who has to deal with some of the situations that are unfortunate. It’s really about cause and effect and the choices that we make.”

On the small screen, Henson will be reuniting with “Soul Food” alum Nicole Ari Parker on “Single Ladies,” which will be airing on its new network home, Centric. “It is from the old ‘Single Ladies’ but it is being redone; it has been recast. Queen Latifah is still executive producer. LisaRaye is still in it, Nicole Ari Parker is now in it, so you have a couple of cast members from ‘Soul Food’ now on it,” he says.

On hosting Morehouse College’s signature fundraiser, Candle in the Dark …
“I was thankful and honored to be called back to Morehouse College. This will be the second time I will be speaking at Morehouse. To be invited back for the second time is a wonderful occasion for me. It’s always insightful and informative for me to be around the men at Morehouse who are working to expand the consciousness of young black men in America.”

On how he stays in shape …
“I run about five miles a day. I try to do that every day. I box, I lift weights, and I try to eat right. If you take care of the body temple, the body temple takes care of you.

Would he do a reality show?
“If it was dance related, or if it was related to brand building.”
