In an outcome that caught no one by surprise, Fifty Shades of Grey, the film adaptation of E.L. James’ wildly popular steamy novel blew the competition out of the water to claim the No. 1 spot at this weekend’s box office.
With a seemingly perfect set up of debuting over the Valentine’s Day weekend and opening on 3,646 screens, a record for an R-rated movie, it seems there was to be no stopping Christian Grey and all of his shades as the film brought in just over $81 million domestically. The Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Firth-led action adventure Kingsman: The Secret Service had a strong opening of $35 million to take second place. Last week’s top draw, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water fell to No. 3 this week, but still earned a very respectable $30 million. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper was able to top the $300 million mark stateside after pulling in an additional $16 million. Closing out the top five is Jupiter Ascending with $9.4 million raked in.
