Kendrick Lamar’s new song, ‘The Blacker the Berry,’ delivers hard-hitting consciousness

After recent accolades for his Grammy Award-winning song titled “i,” Kendrick Lamar has since released a new single titled, “The Blacker the Berry.” Produced by Boi 1 Da and Terrace Martin, this song delivers the hard-hitting and conscious Lamar that we all can appreciate. This consciousness is also evident in the cover art for the song.

With this track it’s evident that Kendrick is following in 2Pac’s footsteps from his song “Keep Your Head Up” as both songs contain the line “The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice.” What makes this song deep is the way Lamar delivers his stance on the recent acts of police brutality and violence in the Black community.

While K-Dot calls himself the biggest hypocrite in 2015 in each of his verses and highlights the problems African Americans face, he ultimately reveals that the hypocrisy is really located in how the community is outraged at violent acts around Trayvon Martin and Eric Gardner while murder associated with gang violence occurs in the ‘hood every day.
